ATLANTIC FILM FESTIVAL 2008
In addition to screening films from around the world and across Canada, and providing a platform for showcasing the finest Atlantic Canadian films, AFF programmers scour the world for unique films for an AFF audience. Whether it’s inspiring documentaries, offbeat film noir, the latest Hollywood has to offer or beautifully crafted animation, there will be a favourite film for everyone.
Inspired Script is a competitive opportunity for Atlantic Canadian writers to submit, develop and pitch script ideas to potential producers, with the winner receiving funding to turn their idea into a film. Our Inspired Doc program screens the best documentary films and invites these filmmakers to attend the screenings for a facilitated Q&A session with the audience, offering an exciting insight into their vision and approach to these films.
Inspired Music is a program of music films, master classes, panels, keynotes, and innovative projects like 10 X 10 where 10 filmmakers pair up with 10 artists to create 10 music videos in a four-day period. The AFF’s music program also encompasses Music & Image, a partnership between the AFFA and the East Coast Music Association. M&I is dedicated to the professional development and promotion of East Coast music, and designed to bridge the gap between music and film through professional development sessions, one-on-one meetings between artists and music supervisors and exciting showcase performances. Music & Image is active throughout the year, both in Canada and the United States, attending events and monitoring industry activity.

ARSENALS 2008
Arsenals - Riga International Film Forum is held biennially in September. September 12 – 21, 2008 will be the XVIII edition of the festival.
The IFF program consists of the Forum International Competition Screening, the Baltic Film Competition (films from Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia), the Retrospective Screenings, the world cinema Panorama, and special thematic programs. The main prize in the International Competition Screening in the amount of 10 000 USD is drawn in a lottery and each of the directors receives a special prize – Magical Crystal. An international jury consisting of film industry professionals judges the Baltic Film Competition. The international jury awards films with money prize and diploma in the following categories: Best Baltic Film, Best Full-length Feature Film, Best Documentary Film and Best Animation Film. There is a FIPRESCI jury working in both competition programs. There are different other activities along with the film screenings, like exibitions and special events in the festival's club and other places in Riga and Keipene.
The Focus
Arsenals will take a glance back in the history before 80 years when the world of cinema experienced one of its most significant metamorphosis and convulsions at the same time – the birth of sound cinema in period between 1927 and 1928.
International Film Competition
A special Commission of Selection will choose around 15 films characterized by an outstanding content and uncommon means of expression for the Competition of Arsenals. Full - length feature films, short feature films, documentary films and animated films of 35 mm will be included in the selection.
Baltic Film Competition
The section will include 20 films: features, documentaries and animated films which will be evaluated by two juries: the international jury represented by members of significant film festivals (Rotterdam, Karlovy Vari, Locarno and more) and FIPRESCI jury. The main aim of this section is promoting the Baltic cinema in the world and raising interest of the local spectators about the actualities of the Baltic cinematography. There are four nominations for prizes in this section: the Best Feature film, the Best Documentary film, the Best Animated film and the Best Baltic film.
World’s Cinema Panorama
As usual Forum also offers world’s cinema Panorama which is a unique opportunity to get to know different cultures of the world through the curious eye of film projector. It is the most versatile and multifarious of all sections of the Forum as it guides the spectator all around the world’s continents to the furthest corners of the earth representing 30 cinema cultures of different countries. This section is designed constantly and actively following the news of cinema to shape an idea about the actual themes of world’s cinema.
World’s Cinema Panorama. Evening Films
During 8 nights in the Big Hall of Cinema Riga films created in last two years will be screened- films of famous directors, bright, classic, stunning, and provocative, already gained the world’s recognition, triumphed in different notable film festivals, and loved by spectators. They are offered for a wide scale of spectators - aesthetes of cinema, a group of friends for a pleasant evening. These are films that usually gain the most attention of the society of Riga.
French Film Programme
In collaboration with French Culture Centre in Riga a special programme of French films will be designed. During the last 2 years various legendary French film directors have created new works. Along such representatives of the new wave as Claude Chabrol, Eric Romer also Alain Resnais, Jean Becker and legendary Georgian director Temur Babluani residing in France have made new films. Instead of screening a film retrospective we offer a unique opportunity to follow the paths of cinema’s history creators after a half of century,
New Silent Films
A new tendency emerges in the world cinema - black and white style silent films. Living in the period of sound these new silent films have kept the right to record a soundtrack which, as pages of caption previously, nowadays guides the spectator with a help of music and story - teller. These films are based on appearance of the actor – its gestures, mimic, gaze and are characterized by predominance of the visual not the content. They lead the spectator to a slightly mythical world to meet our unconscious fantasies of childhood.
Retrospective of Hong Kong Films
Hong Kong’s films ultimately have attracted the world’s attention with an expressive cinematic language. The Programme will include the brightest recently created films of this region directors. Despite the oppressive predominance of action films in Hong Kong, the alternative or art cinema has gained a stable niche. Its directors avoid presence of conventional themes or traditional visual methods in their works. The most notable representatives of this movement- Wong Kar-Wai, Stanley Kwan, Eddie Fong have triumphed not only in Hong Kong but also in significant international film festivals and reviews of critics. Arsenals will explore the destiny of these masters after their triumph, in search for succession or possible notions of original cinematic movements in new directors’ works, such as Patrick Tam’s new films.
Retrospective of Slovak Cinema in the 1980s
In collaboration with Slovakia Embassy in Latvia we plan to offer a Retrospective of Slovak cinema in 20th century 80ties, which has been an extremely rich period in Slovak Cinema’s history. After the Spring Of Prague in 1986 and a decade of intense relationship with the government, the environment in Slovakia became more favorable to express creative ideas. Slovaks as well as Czechs intended to liberate themselves of the loop of social-realism, preferring films about the everyday life of an ordinary person, its passions and choices. Two great Slovak film directors will celebrate their 70th anniversaries in 2008 – Dusan Hanák and Juraj Jakubisko whose films will be screened in the Programme of Arsenals to celebrate this event.
Retrospective of Yevgeny Yufit
In the beginning of 80ties Yevgeny Yufit creates performances and takes part in St.Petersburg’s unofficial art exhibitions. In 1984 he founds an underground studio Mzhalalafilm and the society of Necrorealism which tendencies are present in his initial films: Werewolf Orderlies (1984), Spring (1987) and other. He actively works in CINEFANTOM in its beginnings and becomes famous as one of the fathers of parallel cinema. Concept CINEFANTOM exists already for more than 20 years, since the first cinema analyzing journal CINE FANTOM was published in 1985. The journal has always been related to the underground of soviet cinema - the legendary movement of parallel cinema. In 90ties CINEFANTOM becomes more than just a club as it unifies the independent filmmakers and contemporary artists. Nevertheless, in 90ties there is no sign of Necrorealism in Yufit’s works; three full – length feature films are made in collaboration with Wladimir Maslov – Papa, Father Frost is Dead (1991), The Wooden Room (1995) and Silver Heads (1998). This is the moment when international film festivals such as IFF of Rotterdam, IFF of Locarno, IFF of Toronto and IFF of Montreal notice films of Yufit. Retrospective of Yevgeny Yufit will be offered in collaboration with Museum of Cinema of the Netherlands.

The International Ethnographic Film Festival (SIEFF) is held in Nuoro and organized by the Istituto Superiore
Etnografico of Sardinia. The Festival, which is a biennial event, has always adopted a specific theme, e.g., “Music and Rituals” (1998); “Children” (2000); “Food” (2002); “Tourism/Tourisms” (2004). Since the 2006 edition the Festival has changed its previously traditional characteristic of focusing on a single theme, concentrating its programme instead on a selection of recently made documentary films with an ethno-anthropological prospective, special attention being given to those works principally concerned with themes that inevitably bring us back to the representation of contemporary life. The works chosen for the official programme of the Festival will compete for the following awards: A. “Grazia Deledda” Prize for the Best Film; B. Prize for Best Film, set and produced in a
Mediterranean country; C. Prize for Best Film by a Sardinian director; D. Prize for Most Innovative Film.

SIEFF 2008
This year the Festival intends to focus its interests particularly on the following themes: the production and circulation of folk music globally; spirituality and transcendence in a world dominated by the effects of globalisation; ecoanthropology; tourism.
Apart from films in competition the Festival will also present films out of competition. A whole day will be dedicated to a specific theme, with screenings of films out of competition and conferences with experts and academics from Italy and abroad. The films will be accompanied by a brief presentation and, as a general rule, commented on and discussed with their directors. The projections, talks, conferences and discussions will be served by simultaneous translations in Italian and English.

RIFF 2008
From September 25th to October 5th we present our impressive and diverse program with close to a hundred films, zooming in on the freshest and most exciting debuts of young and upcoming directors – therefore the New Visions Category with the Discovery of the Year Award will be one of the highlights of the festival. Further categories include Open Seas, where the best festival and arthouse films of the past festival years are brought together; Three by Three, featuring three distinguished but little known directors, Horizons, highlighting the cinema of Argentina; Icelandic Panorama with recent Icelandic films, a selection of the best current Documentaries and Midnight Movies, where the uncanny is given a stage.
Brand New: Sound on Sight
Amongst others inspired by Reykjavík’s bustling music scene, which has drawn attention for its progressive creativity, we created a new category named Sound on Sight. As Music is evidently becoming more and more important within films and the demand for music-focused films is rising, out new category will be dedicated to this popular trend. Professionals from the music and film industry will be meeting in a panel, discussing the current upsurge in music documentaries, the connection between film distribution and soundtracks, and all the legal and ideological complications that can arise. Along with a concert, a high profile market and film screenings are planned.
World Changes
As a result of the festival’s strong sociological profile and the current expansion of environmental consciousness (amongst others enforced by “An Inconvenient Truth”), another new category has emerged: world.changes. In addition to our emphasis on Human Rights, we’ll focus on these urgent and important issues in screenings and panels. This category will be held in collaboration with the president of Iceland, Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson who has for many years placed emphasis on the environment.
Honorary Guest - Constantin Costa-Gavras
We proudly announce that the master of political thriller and Oscar award winner Constantin Costa-Gavras will be an honorary guest of RIFF 2008. Characterized by a dark, threatening and dramatic tone, Costa-Gavras work never avoided the debate on political themes. The greatest deal of attention he attracted with the fast-paced thriller “Z”, which brought him an Oscar for the Best Foreign Film in 1970. RIFF-visitors will get the chance to experience him personally participating in the festival’s program as well as to see a few well selected films of his oeuvre on the big screen. Last but not least Costa-Gavras will be distinguished with the RIFF’s award for lifetime achievement.
On the Frontline: Nordic Women
“Women and film” is a topic that has always been accentuated at RIFF. This year we put a strong emphasis on female directors and actors from Scandinavia. Therefore we’re expecting thrilling and beautiful guests – prick up your ears for upcoming announcements!
Talent Campus 2008
RIFF’S Transatlantic talent campus will be celebrated on the weekend of the 3rd of October till the 5th of October 2008. The main objective of the Talent Campus is to help young filmmakers make first hand contacts with film producers and other professionals who can help and consult them with their first feature film. Besides special parties and events are scheduled. The deadline for applying to the Talent Campus is the 15th of August, 2008 for foreign applicants and the 1st of September for Icelandic applicants.
Among the most recently confirmed lecturers in the Talent Campus will be Paprika Steen who is perhaps most known for her part in the Danish Dogma-movement. Not only has she starred in many of the most popular danish films ever made such as the Idiots, the Celebration, Mifunes last song (Idioterne, Festen, Mifunes sidste sang), but Paprika has received many awards as an actress such as the Bodil award twice, the Robert award twice and the American film institute´s grand jury prize for her role in the film Okay. She has also directed two full length films. One of them, Til døden os skiller, will be shown on RIFF.

Demand for music-focused films is rising. From musical films such as Dancer in the Dark by Lars von Trier to music documentaries and dramas such as the acclaimed Control and Shine a light, there are numerous evidences of such a phenomenon. The frontier between the music industry and the film industry is not clear anymore with the emergence of an “Ipod” generation of film directors and spectators that are more and more interested in watching on screen the history of their music idols. Aware of this deep trend the Reykjavik International Film Festival is launching the Sound on Sight Music-driven Film Market.
Held in association with peacefulfish and JUST TEMPTATION on 3 October 2008, the market will bring 5 selected producers and distributors together at the market in REYKJAVIK, Iceland. Therefore, RIFF is making a call for music-driven film projects.
Eligible projects:
-
Highly promising project aimed at the international market
-
Project where music is the main topic such as music documentaries, music true story drama, music-driven drama, music docudrama, or musical.

-

ARCHIDOC - DOCUMENTARY AND ARCHIVES 2008
Sessions 1 and 2
The first two sessions are led by two tutors. In 2007, these were Erez Laufer (Israel) and Stan Neumann (France). The tutors help participants develop their project by tutoring their work on the point of view, on the storytelling
issues and on the role of archives in their film project. The tutors, who are also experienced editors, also advise participants in the editing process of the film trailer.
Session 1 - October 13 - 17, 2008
• Tutoring on projects in individual and small group sessions.
• Master Classes, where tutors and guest filmmakers present their own films. Their case studies demonstrate all the
different stages in the evolution of a project (script, rushes, footage, final film).
• A presentation of various visual treatments of archive materials.
• Presentation by an international audiovisual legal expert of concrete cases from his professional experience. He also advises participants on their individual projects.
• Personalised counselling on main archive sources, by an experienced archive researcher.
Session 2 - November 12 - 19, 2008
• Trailer editing session. Participants are given the possibility to edit or re-edit their film trailer with the help of an experienced editor.
• Advanced tutored writing sessions. Participants check and rewrite a new version of the synopsis and note of intent prepared during the intersession.
Session 3 - January 20 - 23, 2009
• Pitching technique training (Tue Steen Müller with Sibylle Kurz in 2006, and with Alexandre Cornu in 2007).
• Presentation of the contemporary professional European documentary film industry context.
• Pitch of projects to a panel of producers and European commissioning editors at FIPA, the International Audiovisual Programme Festival held annually in Biarritz, France.
In order to allow participants to situate their projects in the actual European industry context, an exeprienced producer or documentary commissioning editor presents a global situation of production and broadcasting of contemporary documentary films. At the FIPA, after being taught pitching techniques by two experts, participants present their projects to a panel of producers and European televisions commissioning editors.
